...not a field trip, but we want to be educated.
...not a business trip, but we need to work.
...not a family reunion, but we want to visit friends and family.
...not a vacation, but we want to be re-created.
...not a mission trip, but we want to be missional.
We want to purposefully step out of our comfortable house in a quiet and safe neighborhood in a clean conservative city, shake loose from a all-too-familiar daily routine, and seek adventure in the form of new places, new experiences, and new friends.

Aggh - I realized after writing this that it sounds like a *groan* MISSION STATEMENT! I usually abhor mission statements. But after getting repeatedly asked what the trip was all about I felt like I had to give it some definition.

I was listening to one of Bobb Biehl’s short podcasts this weekend. He spoke about, in life, having a dream and 3 measurable goals. Sounds like your “mission statement” fits in with that, and I think that’s a good thing.
I share your dislike for mission statements in general—they tend to be more marketing slogans and self-important catch phrases than statements of focus and passion.
