Virginia Beach Addendum

The kids play Pickle on the beach.

It’s Storybird, Peoples, the Storybird you have read about, but who has never written before. This is her first post on the website, so read it carefully. Last weekend, at First Landing State Park, Data and I made two friends. They had ended up right next to our campsite, all the better to visit them. There was Dane, who had blond hair. He was thin, and eleven years old. He…   Read More >>

Virginia Beach

Trying for a different sort of beach shot.

We spent a full week in Virgina Beach, VA and had an awesome time.  The photos will pretty much tell the story but here are some highlights: First Landing State Park This is a beautiful state park - it quite reminds me of Holland State Park back home in that it’s right on the beach and probably impossible to get into in the summer.  We spent most of our time…   Read More >>

The Hotel Stay

This guy really made my day - parking himself between us and another trailer puller.

After scheduling the Train-ee ExpressionEngine class in Richmond, I began looking for campgrounds near to town. I found two places that were basically run-down mobile home parks with a couple of open slabs that made parking lots look spacious. Next I looked at Pocahontas State Park. Google maps stated it was about 21 miles. We decided we’d rather not have to drive that distance along with the other commuters—one hour…   Read More >>

Maymont Park, Richmond

Butterfly

Here’s a Twitter-inspired trip! I mentioned on Twitter that we were in the Richmond area, and Lani Pokrana (@lpokrana), a fellow nomad, suggested the Maymont Park as a nice daytrip.  We researched it a bit online and with an Italian Garden, Japanese Garden, wildlife exhibits, nature center, and mansion tours all available it sounded great.  It was also closer to where our upcoming ExpressionEngine class will be so we were…   Read More >>

Pocahontas State Park, Richmond

One of a couple beautiful sunsets in Richmond

Tonight we wrap up a few days at the Pocahontas State Park outside of Richmond, VA.  We’ve had a great few days here with sunny days, campfires, bike riding, and brilliant sunsets.  As a pre-teen I was heavy into BMX bikes - not racing but just running around the neighborhood on with friends.  We built our own bikes, buying parts with saved allowances and modifying bikes that had formerly had…   Read More >>

We Are Learning

How does a sundial work? (Richmond, VA)

We had an extra long summer school break, what with packing up the house, prepping the trailer, Mike working and teaching a class, etc. The kids ended up having lots of freedom and little responsibility. I, the Teacher, packed several books and supplies, but did not put together a formal schedule, planning instead to take advantage of our changing locations. I naively thought we’d take a week or so to…   Read More >>

Skyline Drive

Sunset

Waynesboro, VA is right in between the northern point of the Blue Ridge Parkway (in the George Washington National Forest) and the Skyline Drive (in the Shenandoah National Forest).  Since we had explored just a small part of the BRP, we decided to do the same with the Skyline Drive.  We hoped for a sunset so drove up in late afternoon. The weather today, however was not the clear fall…   Read More >>

Blue Ridge Parkway

Late afternoon view

When I saw on the map how close we were to the Blue Ridge Parkway I had to get us on it.  This day was the absolute perfect fall day - sunny, about 70 degrees with a light breeze, and the fall color in full swing. We had to change campgrounds, so when we arrived at the new one we dropped the trailer as quickly as possible, stopped at a…   Read More >>

Greenville

Pretty little spot with the Blue Ridge Mtns in the background.

This stop was more about the people than what we did or saw.  The private campground we stayed at was quite busy with activities - even this late in the season.  Outdoor movies, haunted hayrides, mini-golf, cornhole - all available to guests.  We could tell this campground had a tight community - moreso than we’ve experienced elsewhere.  It wasn’t the newest, cleanest, or nicest but had some of the friendliest…   Read More >>
