San Antonio

Storybird hears the news that we are headed to Mesa

San Antonio is always a favorite for us. We’ve had a couple of classes here and always enjoy the food, music, and ambiance of the Riverwalk.  Our visit here was brief - for reasons I’ll explain in a moment - so I don’t have much for pictures.  Still, we had a good time: Dinner at Rosarios with Friends I won’t link you to the restaurants website because it’s a cliche…   Read More >>

Weird Austin - Take Two

The kids have the falls to themselves

So, I have to say it. Austin, please don’t be offended. You are just not that weird. OK, yes, you have a few oddball things going on here and there. You have the bats and the Cathedral of Junk but once those have been visited….the weirdness sort of peters out.  Any city your size would naturally have a few oddballs. Even our smaller hometown of conservative Holland, Michigan had orange…   Read More >>

Weird Austin - Take One

A junkless family in the junk.

We’ve been in the Austin, TX area for just shy of a week and we’re really full of it. Well, OK…really that’s the current status of our holding tanks because all this time we’ve been at a state park without a sewer hookup.  That’s pretty good considering there’s four of us here and this trailer of ours isn’t equipped with huge holding capacities in an effort to be “half-ton towable”. …   Read More >>

Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay & EECI

Students from the first EECI class still like each other 4 years later.

Forgive me. We’re in Texas. I’ve been around men in hats and trucks adorned with brush-guards and headache racks all week.  If’n I had some boots I’d stand up, drag a booted toe across the gravel in front of me, push back the hat on my head, look you in the eye and say “All those schedules? Places to be? Times to keep? Stress of being on time? Yea, that…   Read More >>

Sanger Texas, Alpacas, and Haikus

Harrison leading Kizmet

Kansas City to Sanger Texas. A long drive. Pulled in after dark Reservations at Wagon Master RV Park. Parked here for a week. Full-hook ups, wi-fi, laundry room, dog, alpacas. What else could we need? Alpaca cria, Rusty Spur, born Friday morn’. Six alpacas now. Plus a dog and cat. We help feed, pet, hold, and herd our animal friends. We accomplished much working, learning, and playing. It was a…   Read More >>

Balmorhea State Park

Our rig with the Davis Mountains in the background

I awoke Monday morning to an orchestra of beautiful bird song. I would have stayed in bed and listened for another hour, but Mike and I had agreed that we needed to leave South Llano River State Park fairly early for the day’s drive. We headed west on I-10. What a long, rather desolate road. Not many towns along the way; even fewer gas stations right off of the highway.…   Read More >>

South Llano River State Park

Our first (live) armadillo sighting!

The route headed west out of San Antonio is a bit difficult to plan out.  It contains a lot of vast open stretches with distances between waypoints further than the 3-4 hours max we prefer to go on a given day.  We chose the Junction area as a easy first-day drive only being a couple of hours away.  The South Llano River State Park looked interesting so we headed there. …   Read More >>

San Antonio Area

Golden sunset over some choice Canyon Lake RV spots.

We left the Rio Grande Valley and headed north to the San Antonio area. Tim and Stephanie Sheaffer of Give Every Day were camping in Canyon Lake, TX, and we wanted to meet up with them before continuing west. Upon the recommendation of the Ticknor family, we stayed two nights at Potter’s Creek Park (a US Army Corp of Engineers park). Mike enjoyed watching the deer graze while eating his…   Read More >>

The Ticknor Tribe

The Ticknor Family

When we first started planning this trip last year we quickly came across the Families on the Road (or FOTR) website.  FOTR.com links to the blogs that families maintain while on the road, and I used Google Reader to subscribe to all the active ones so that we could easily keep up with them.  My hope was that we’d both learn tips about living on the road as a family…   Read More >>

Mission

Storybird's trick

A week with grandparents! That’s really what this portion of our trip was all about.  They are RV’rs, but some medical issues are keeping them from traveling for a while so since we are mobile we came to them.  Dad lined us up with a nice RV pad at a neighbors two doors over - close and free! When we arrived Dad was set to give the trailer a wash…   Read More >>
