Conflict in Fremont

A creek runs next to the park and feeds the lake

So there are these two High School gangs in Fremont.  At the first dance in the new high school one of the members of Gang A fell in love with a sister of a member of Gang B. The two gangs were set to converge on our campground for a big fight but…. Well, OK. We experienced conflict during our time in the sleepy rural town of Fremont, MI but…   Read More >>

East Jordan

Sunrise on Lake Charlevoix

This was a split week. I stayed in the trailer in the East Jordan Tourist Park ( a city-owned RV park) while MsBoyink & the kids stayed with her parents at a cottage a few miles down the road. This years cottage visit is the last in a tradition that has gone on for several years, and and each & every year at this time I have some big work…   Read More >>

Boyne City

Storybird's Birthday Present

Hiya, ya’ll! Just felt like typing that. We went to Avalanche Bay in Boyne City for my fourteenth birthday. I wanted to go to a water park for my birthday. We were going to go to Great Wolf Lodge, but a friend told my mom that I was going to be bored there. So we decided to go to Avalanche Bay instead. It was the second time we had been…   Read More >>

Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore / Northern Michigan

Harrison takes a parent photo

This stop is marked by its superlatives and firsts.  The superlatives are more impressive so we’ll look at those first.  We visited the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore park, recently voted Good Morning America’s Most Beautiful Place in America. We didn’t touch but a fraction of what the park has to offer. And it is beautiful, no doubt.  But - as proud as we are that a place from our…   Read More >>

Houghton Lake

Storybird celebrated her birthday with a tattoo

Mike really wanted to make a stop at Houghton Lake on our way from the Detroit area to Interlochen. After a bit of research, I found a private park that sounded like it would meet our needs. Upon arrival we found that the drive into the park was dirt and mud puddles. When I checked in, our campsite was changed since our assigned site was still “underwater.” After studying the…   Read More >>

Titanic Exhibit

Storybird thought this would make a good photo

When we were headed down into Tennessee, I saw a sign on a billboard that advertised a Titanic exhibit in Detroit. It went through September the first. I remember saying something to my parents about it, but I didn’t really hope that I would be able to go to it. But we did. It was just Daddy, Harrison and I because Mommy was lying in bed with a fever. We…   Read More >>

Greenfield Village

Mill

People in the 1930s must have thought Henry Ford crazy. Here he was, moving all these old, useless buildings near his factory. Why would he move his old house to this place? Or the Wright brothers’ shop? Or an old saw mill? We certainly are thankful that his forward thinking gave us Greenfield Village. We thought we’d explore for the morning and return home before the heat of the day.…   Read More >>

Detroit Makers Faire

Boyink Family at Detroit Makers Faire

The Detroit Makers Faire was the main reason we came over to this side of the state, and it didn’t disappoint. What is it?  Boy, hard to describe.  Let me just rattle off a bunch of words that all have an aspect at a Makers Faire. Electronics. Mechanics. Hydraulics. Pneumatics. Art. Sculpture. Movement. Wonder. Exploration. Mad Scientists. Inventors. Hackers. Imagination. Bootstrapped. Contraptions. Tinkering. Homegrown. Steampunk. Alternative Culture. Alternative Energy. Engineering.…   Read More >>

Henry Ford Museum

The Edsel Horsecollar Grille

We came to the East side of Michigan mainly to experience the Detroit Makers Faire - but there’s more to our stay here.  The Makers Faire is hosted by the Henry Ford museum, which we’re in disagreement over whether we’ve ever visited as a family so wanted to also visit.  Along with “The Henry Ford” (evidently it’s such a cool place that they are able to drop the word “Museum”…   Read More >>

Markin Glen, Kalamazoo

The lake at night

After spending time at Mike’s folks’ cottage, we drove a couple of hours and set up “camp” a few miles from my parents’ home. Upon my dad’s suggestion, we stayed at Markin Glen, a Kalamazoo County Park. It turned out to be a perfect park for us—both in location and layout. So many good things occurred during our week here. Several get-togethers with extended family. My parents, sister and kids…   Read More >>
