From the Redwood Forest…

California Redwoods

So much for delegating the writing of these entries.  Here sit all the photos and yet - no story!  The help these days… Our next goal after Chico was wanting to see Redwoods. MsBoyink plotted a route that would get us over to the coast where there are a number of options for viewing them.  Her route included an 80-some mile stretch of CA 299, a scenic highway that cuts…   Read More >>

What You Gonna Do in Chico?

Miles of highway have these flowering bushes in the meridian

We heard those words a couple of times during our week here.  So what’s the answer? Let me back up a bit. Our last two spots were Yosemite and San Francisco. Both interesting, but both busy and loud in their own way.  When we were at Yosemite looking for our next spot we chose Chico mainly because it was under 5 hours away and was the current home of the…   Read More >>

Farmers Market!

Chico CA Farmers Market

Here’s a tip: If you’re planning an extended road trip like we’re on and think you’re going to avoid Wal-Mart and buy local everywhere, don’t leave in September. From Michigan. And head north-ish.  In our romantic envisioning before leaving on this trip we saw ourselves driving down smooth back roads with the dappled sun shining through the canopy of trees.  We’d be singing along to the Beach Boys (in perfect…   Read More >>

Recalculating

Meet your new camp hosts!

Yes, we’re still riffing on the GPS theme set by MsBoyink the other day when she posted that she had lost her satellite reception.  Over the past few days we evaluated some options and made a decision that is definitely a recalculating of the nature of our adventure. What is it?  We’ve accepted a camp-host position in Port Angeles, Washington at a beachfront RV park for the summer.  We’re due…   Read More >>

Our Author at Work

Boiling hot, boiling hot I’m on a stove in a pot They are getting me ready for the time of tea My mom, my dad, and you and me The fans do not help at all And the sun will not heed my call Of “Cool down, cool down! That’s a little too much! I’m not accustomed to heat of such.” Wishing for shade, a little rain That wet thing…   Read More >>

Yo - C - Mite

Our logo with El Capitan in the distance

“I want to go to Yo-C-Mite”.  These were Storybird’s words when we were plotting this trip out, and while we corrected her on the pronunciation we’ve somehow kept calling it Yo-C-Mite.  While most of our trip has been very figure-it-out-as-we-go we had roughly planned this visit weeks in advance.  We knew it would come the week after a busy Train-ee Class week so were thinking of it as a “vacation”. …   Read More >>

Lost Satellite Reception

MsBoyink Searches for Signal

Visited Niagara Falls in the rain. Learned about the Civil War by touring through Gettysburg. Touched a piece of the Twin towers in South Carolina. Carefully walked on ice-covered sidewalks in Atlanta. Drove through Mississippi, noting remaining evidence of Hurricane Katrina. Ate freshly picked grapefruit in Texas’ Rio Grand Valley. Walked through awe-inspiring caverns in New Mexico. Saw my first native Saguaro cactus in southern Arizona. Enjoyed hanging out with…   Read More >>

San Francisco

Nuff said.

We spent a full week in San Francisco, but only about a day of that was as sightseers / tourists.  That day was split between two afternoons on the Monday after we arrived and the Saturday before we left. On our first foray into the city our purpose was mainly to figure out the public transit situation which turned out to be relatively painless.  If you are an RV’r and…   Read More >>

Our Urban Lifestyle

Walking to work through Union Square

If there’s one advantage to this whole “life on the road” thing it’s that we can experience a wide variety of lifestyles in a relatively short time and without great hassle.  We’ve spent days in remote parks, miles away from anything with views of only desert, mountains and highways in the distance.  This week we experienced almost the total opposite of that, parking the trailer in a private RV park…   Read More >>
