Grandparents and the Olympic Training Center

The Chula Vista Olympic Training Facility

It was something the entire family had been looking forward to for weeks, ever since we learned about it while still in Arizona. Grandma and Grandpa “A” were flying out to San Diego to visit us! The park we chose was Pio Pico, a Thousand Trails park east of San Diego. Because of the location, we had as close to zero phone coverage we could without actually hitting zero. Luckily,…   Read More >>

Picacho Peak

The Adventuremobile ready to leave AZ

Before leaving Arizona, we had one more stop to make. We had been told by many people that the Sonoran Desert Museum, in Tucson, was a must-see. We decided to set up a little ways out of Tucson at Picacho Peak State Park, since Catalina State Park was booked for the weekend. The campground was quite quiet and the internet was speedy fast. We visited the Sonoran Desert Museum on…   Read More >>

Casa Grande

Old meets older

This was an unplanned stop for us as we moved from the Mesa AZ area down towards the Tucson, AZ area. We had delayed our departure to get laundry caught up, the drive wasn’t long, and so it was mid-afternoon as we were passing by this stop on our route.  We’ve been a bit lacking in the last-minute, serendipitous area of our travel mode so on a whim I pointed…   Read More >>

Final Days in Mesa

Harrison and Kevin

Our final few days in the Mesa area were busy. Pediatrician visit: Storybird was still complaining about her ears. A month ago we visited this office and Storybird began a 10-day course of antibiotics. Apparently, she needed something a bit stronger. With this visit, Storybird had to accept the fact that she—like the Boyink boys—was suffering from seasonal allergies, which was causing accumulation of fluid in her ears, which was…   Read More >>

Red Rock State Park

MsBoyink and Harrison pose at Red Rock State Park, Sedona AZ

After deliberating over a number of other day-hikes in the Sedona area I decided finally to just try a day visit to the Red Rock State Park just west of downtown Sedona. The park listed 5 miles of trails, a vistor center, and picnic areas. I envisioned being able to park the truck close to a restroom and be able to touch base there in between some shorter hikes.  We…   Read More >>

Redeeming Sedona (?)

Boyink girls pose while hiking Boyce Canyon, Sedona, AZ

Ah, Sedona. The very name conjures up the warmth of Arizona, visions of grand colorful mountain vistas, and mid-winter breaks for snowbound travelers. It often gets listed on an Arizona vacation checklist, alongside the Sonoran Desert, Grand Canyon, and Painted Desert. We’ve been here before, almost exactly two years ago. And really didn’t enjoy it due to it being Spring Break which flooded the city with traffic and people, and…   Read More >>

Sonoran Desert 101 Video

Storybird on her Ranger Walk

At some point, most kids want to make a movie, act in a movie, write a movie, whatever. Traveling doesn’t affect that. Traveling can enable it. Which it did. Storybird did her walk/talk on the desert. And we received a request to record it. I said sure, why not, it’ll be fun. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. After around 4 hours of recording, we finally had…   Read More >>

Lake Pleasant Regional Park

Water and Brittlebush flowers defined the aesthetic of our stay

The Internet works. Did you know that? It works, because I say it does..;) One of the frustrations with traveling is wanting to meet people in a similar mode. It’s strange, because on one hand we are always in campgrounds and RV parks full of mobile people. But most often those aren’t the people we want to meet. Oh, they aren’t bad people, they just aren’t our people. Our people…   Read More >>

Camphosting Friends

Georgia and Randy

Today we said “See ya on down the road” to our community of camphosting friends. It was bittersweet. We’ve grown close to some of these folks over the past four and a half months. Yet, our case of “hitch itch” and desire for exploration and adventure is pretty serious. So, we sought out each of the hosts, snapped a photo and said our goodbyes. We honked the horn, waved, and…   Read More >>

Camphost Party

Storybird, Caroline, Susan and Patty try to mislead a raker

Harrison and I helped set up for a host party on the 21st of March. There were some games; Pass the Pass, Cholla Ball Golf, Horseshoes, Raking Contest. I played two games of Pass the Pass against my kid friends, and won it both times. Somehow, I just know when to catch it. I can do the same with the football. First, I helped Mark set up the Pass the…   Read More >>
