Our Travels in October 2010

Ringing Rocks

When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I…   Read More >>

Covered bridge by park

We wanted to visit Philadelphia, so found a campground that looked (before we learned about Philly traffic and construction) about 35 minutes outside of downtown. We assume the roads in this area are based on pre-automotive horse and buggy tracks.  I’ve never seen so many houses and structures so close to the roads, which are already narrow, twisting and overgrown.  Add in barns with stone hedges and the area feels…   Read More >>

Data at the Museum

This weekend we fulfilled one of Data’s big goals for the trip - a visit to Cooperstown, NY and the Baseball Hall of Fame. We handled this a bit differently than most families probably do - as Data is the only real Boyink sports fan.  I gave him the option - saying if he wanted us there as a family we’d go as a family, but he saw the lack…   Read More >>

So, Really, What’s It Like?

As I begin writing this post we’re just over the two-week mark in our proposed year-long trip.  We’ve posted a number of entries about where we’ve been and what we’ve done, but that’s only part of the whole picture of what we’re experiencing. And while I want to communicate more about the experience, I’m having trouble finding the words.  But I’ll try anyway… It’s Been a Lot Like Vacation Being…   Read More >>

Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen

Today we really felt like we had the first complete experience that we had been looking for on this trip.  It rained some overnight, but ended before we got up.  A quick look at the forecast confirmed a pretty day in store - mid 60’s and mostly sunny.  We got ourselves up by 7:30, and out the door at 9:00.  We drove the 1/2 hour to Watkins Glen and found…   Read More >>

It’s Been a Good Day

Storybird on Keuka Lake

When we got up this morning, it was no longer raining. Our food in the fridge was still cold (the fridge quit running on gas during the day in Lockport) so we were able to have milk and juice with our cereal. An RV repair shop was only 2 miles away from where we stayed overnight. It only took an hour to assess the problem and fix it (apparently the…   Read More >>

First Official Boondocking Experience

We left Lockport about 6:00pm, heading toward the Finger Lakes region. We knew we would be boondocking for the night on our way toward Keuka Lake. We were looking at churches along the way, but ended up staying the night at a Super Walmart. We couldn’t very well open the slide for the kids to sleep in their bunks, so we made do. Mike and Data slept in our bed,…   Read More >>

Erie Canal, Lockport NY

Inside the Pipe

We spent the better part of the day in Lockport.  There were two attractions running - a boat tour that goes through the locks themselves, or a underground cave walking / boat tour.  Since it was still periodically drizzling and rather cold we opted for the underground walk.  This was also a fair amount cheaper as well. This “cave” is really a man-made water passage that diverted water from the…   Read More >>

Niagara Falls

Downstream from the Falls

No family adventure would be complete without a visit to Niagara Falls.  We have been here before.  About 6 years ago we bought a ‘96 Roadmaster Station Wagon off eBay and it was in Rochester, NY.  We drove out, picked up the wagon, and drove home stopping at the Falls on the way. This time we ditched the trailer in a private campground in Lockport NY, and then backtracked the…   Read More >>

Don’t Give Up the Trip!

Don't Give Up the (Tr)ip!

Or - Not Much Fun in Erie. If you are from or live in Erie, I apologize.  I’m sure it’s a great place when the weather is warm, the amusement park is thronged with people, and the beaches are a great destination on a sunny summer day. We had trouble enjoying ourselves in Erie.  And we stayed longer than we should have. We chose Erie because it was a good…   Read More >>
