Who?
We are a family of four from Holland, Michigan, USA. MsBoyink and I have been married 20 years and we have two children - a 15 year old boy and a 13 year old girl. I am self-employed as a web developer and teacher, and we’ve always been homeschoolers. We are all readers, curious about the world around us, and more interested in experiencing it first-hand than watching it on TV.
What?
The adventure we left on in September of 2010 was living for a year on the road in the USA (read our travel journal). We purchased a truck and 5th wheel trailer for the trip and planned to meet as many people and see as much of America’s beauty as we could cram into a year. We ended up being gone a little over a year, but around the 7 month mark decided a year wasn’t going to be enough so came home to sell our house and remaining possessions, and take off again indefinitely. In addition to fulltime travel we are also seeking a “family dream” - a higher purpose for our trip. Stay tuned on that front.
Where?
The first year we made it into 34 states (view the map of our travels). We’re not quite sure where we’ll go on our second leg, but spending a summer exploring our home state of Michigan, catching some of the places around the US we had to miss, and even some international RV-based travel is under consideration.
When?
We’ll be in West Michigan until late May 2012, after that….who knows?
Why?
Why would a family give up a comfortable middle-class existence in the second happiest town in the USA? The short answer is because we can. Besides that - the desire to meet people & see places. The realization that our kids only have a few years left at home with us. And a desire for the adventure of a lifetime. Now - before old age and ill health kick in. There’s also a longer answer.
